The Delicate Dance of Directing: Balancing Expectations and Student Growt

As drama teachers, we orchestrate beautiful chaos. We set high expectations for our productions, striving to showcase the best in our students. This requires us to be clear about the performance standards we want to achieve. However, the reality is rarely a one-size-fits-all scenario.


Sometimes, we encounter limitations. Talent levels vary, and we must adapt our vision to accommodate the strengths of our cast. We strive to find creative solutions that maintain a high bar for production without crushing student spirits. This delicate balance requires flexibility and an understanding eye.

But let's be honest, only some students embrace direction. There are the "know-it-alls," those who cling stubbornly to their interpretations even when their choices border on the absurd. These situations demand a measured approach. We need to be firm in our vision while remaining patient and encouraging. Building trust is key; it takes time and a genuine connection with our students.

Then there are the "complainers." These students refrain from taking responsibility and may even drag down the morale of the entire cast. Here, open communication and a united front from the other actors can be crucial.

While it's tempting to wish for a world where students instantly embrace every challenge, the reality is that some will be entitled and resistant. Our role isn't to punish them but to guide them towards growth. The best revenge, as they say, is living well. If we can help them realize their full potential within the production, they'll walk away with valuable skills and a deeper appreciation for the collaborative spirit of theatre.

Ultimately, it's about fostering trust. Building strong relationships with our students takes time and effort, but the rewards are immeasurable. When trust is established, students become more receptive to feedback and invested in the success of the production. This collaborative spirit is where the magic happens – when individual talents come together to create a truly memorable performance.
