Striking the Right Balance: Evaluating Benefits and Risks in Theatre Education Research for Children's Social-Emotional Learning

The importance of theatre education in enhancing children's skills, especially in social-emotional learning (SEL), is increasingly being recognized (MUHS, 2020). However, conducting research involving humans, especially minors, requires considering potential risks and benefits carefully. This study aims to explore the potential dangers associated with a research project that analyzes the impact of theatre instruction on students' social and emotional learning. Potential Risks in Theatre Education Research It is crucial to investigate the positive impact of theatre education on social and emotional learning (SEL). However, it is equally essential to acknowledge the potential risks associated with different research methods (Trochim, 2006). These risks can be categorized into four areas: psychological stress, privacy and confidentiality, coercion and informed consent, and ethical concerns. 1. Psychological Stress: Engaging in theatrical activities can cause performance anxiety,...

A stage for self-discovery: My students' unforgettable experience at the ISSEA Drama and Arts Festival

I am thrilled to have attended my first ISSEA Drama and Arts Festival. It was an unforgettable experience filled with positive emotions that inspired me. The ISK campus was breathtaking, and despite our lack of sleep, we all vibrated enthusiastically. Our students were a mix of excited and nervous energy, and for good reason! The festivities started with a lively campus march led by passionate Kenyan drummers. The energy was electric, a perfect combination of creativity and teamwork that defines ISSEA. As we walked, children from other schools waved and shouted, treating us like family. It was a fantastic feeling! The opening ceremony was a highlight reel of great performances. Each school interpreted this year's subject, "Parallel Realms," distinctively. Our students were intrigued by the various abilities displayed on the show. Backstage, they were naturally nervous, but I smiled and reminded them of all the hard work we had put in. The pride of AISM rested on their s...

Personalized Play: Adapting Theatre Education for a New Generation of Learners

The spotlight illuminates my diverse classroom, revealing a vibrant group of actors excited to experience the magic of theatre. Each face reflects unique skills and learning styles, but how can I ensure that everyone shines under the spotlight? Personalization is the key to creating an inclusive stage where all performers can thrive. (What is Inclusive Teaching? n.d.)   This course taught us how to create a diverse and inclusive classroom. We studied materials, such as the work on teacher-parent collaboration by Adams et al. (2016) and Anderson's (2018) recommendations for fostering inclusive environments. We also learned how to organize instruction (McFarland-McDaniels, n.d.), plan curriculum (Cullen, 2016), and create lesson plans (Introduction to the Activities & Looking Activities: talking and listening, 2005) to meet various requirements. We can apply these theoretical concepts and turn them into actionable measures to personalize your theatrical experience.   Instead...

Collaborative Learning Analytics: Empowering Students in the Inclusive Theatre Classroom

To create an inclusive theatrical classroom, it is crucial to have a deep understanding of individual needs and learning styles. Learner analytics is essential in this setting, providing insights beyond traditional exams and facilitating personalized learning experiences for each student. To effectively use learner analytics, a comprehensive strategy is necessary. Students' engagement, participation, collaboration, and emotional responses during performances, rehearsals, and conversations can all be captured through observation and interaction (Possi & Milinga, 2017). Informal check-ins, group discussions, and post-activity reflections generate rich qualitative data, exposing individual strengths and weaknesses while maintaining the collaborative spirit of theatre. Digital tools and platforms offer qualitative and quantitative data on individual and group growth through assignments, rehearsals, and self-evaluations (Lawrence, 2016). Patterns in script comprehension, character i...

More Than Performance: Cultivating Empathy and Equity Through Inclusive Theatre Practices

Pursuing inclusivity in education is crucial to ensure every student can flourish regardless of their abilities or challenges. Ford's research in "Differentiation through Flexible Grouping: Successfully Reaching All Readers" (Ford, 2005) sheds light on the importance of adaptive materials and flexible grouping, especially in the ever-evolving field of theater and drama education. I will examine the critical role of these techniques in creating an inclusive environment in the theater classroom, where diverse learners can actively participate and excel.   In theatre education, adapting materials is essential for creating an inclusive environment. According to Ford (2005), it is necessary to incorporate diverse scripts to accommodate students with varying reading abilities. Educators should provide options with different levels of complexity, ensuring that all students can engage in the dramatic process without feeling excluded due to their reading proficiency.   As per Ford...
